Young Nigerian , Adeniyi Adekoya popularly known as Adeniyi Drumz shares his story on how he started as a drummer. The 29 year old in this Interview With Joshua Olagundoye emphasises on building consistency in any profession.
Tell us about yourself generally.
I’m Adeniyi Adekoya, a passionate drummer, musician, and rhythm enthusiast. My journey with drums started at a very young age—around 3 or 4 years old—growing up in Molete, Ibadan, a remote area filled with vibrant sounds and energy. Born into a Christian home, music was an integral part of our daily lives, especially during morning devotions. The melodies, handclaps, and harmonies we created as a family fueled my love for rhythm.
Even outside of devotion time, I found ways to express myself musically. As a child, I would roam around the compound, enter the kitchen, gather kegs, stainless plates, and anything that could produce a sound, arranging them like a drum set and creating rhythms. This raw passion and curiosity set the foundation for my drumming career.
What inspired you to be a drummer?
My inspiration came naturally from my surroundings and the deep connection I felt with rhythm. Drumming was more than just making sounds—it was a way to communicate, express emotions, and create joy. Church played a major role in my development, as I started drumming there early on, which further fueled my passion.
However, it wasn’t always easy. In my neighborhood, I was often scolded or beaten by neighbors for making “noise” and disturbing the peace. But I didn’t let that stop me. The more challenges I faced, the stronger my resolve became. Music was calling me, and I knew I had to follow.
Despite the challenges of growing up in Nigeria, where convincing parents about pursuing music as a career was difficult, I remained determined. I would have loved to study music formally, but against all odds, I trained myself—learning by watching others, listening, and practicing consistently.
How do you preach the gospel of consistency?
Consistency is the foundation of mastery. I always tell people, talent is great, but consistency is what separates great drummers from good ones. My journey proves that showing up every day, practicing, and pushing through challenges is key to success.
I didn’t have formal training, yet I became a skilled drummer through:
• Self-discipline – making time to practice, even when I felt discouraged.
• Observation & Learning – watching drummers, studying their techniques, and applying them.
• Re-learning & Improving – being open to feedback, refining my skills, and adapting.
Consistency is about embracing the process, not just the results. Many people give up when they don’t see instant success, but I encourage drummers (and creatives in general) to trust the journey, keep refining their craft, and never stop learning.
How has your journey as a drummer/music person been generally?
It’s been challenging but rewarding. From childhood struggles to convincing my family that music was my calling, to facing obstacles in an industry that sometimes undervalues drummers, it hasn’t been easy. But the beautiful moments outweigh the tough times.
Drumming has opened doors I never imagined—performing on big stages, playing at cultural events, collaborating with amazing musicians, and even traveling. Every performance, every challenge, every opportunity has shaped me into the drummer I am today.
Looking back, I see that every challenge prepared me for greatness. I learned to adapt, push forward, and most importantly, remain passionate. Drumming is not just what I do—it’s who I am.
